 The Macanese Diaspora in 2023

Based on new research and an extrapolation of data from recent surveys, the current population of Macanese and other related Luso- Asians around the world is estimated at more than 1.6 million. There are Macanese (see our definition) now living in over 35 regions and countries, including Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Timor, Mozambique, Australia, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Portugal, England, Germany and France. According to demographic research, almost 500,000 live outside Asia. (The map illustrates where some of these communities may be located based on data received from on-line responses.)

Portuguese genealogist Dr. Jorge Forjaz has identified over 60,000 Macanese and more than 500 family names. Several thousand more names were added to a revised edition to Forjaz’s 1996 publication, published in 2017. Other researchers in Europe and Southeast Asia, citing archival data from Goa, Malaysia, Thailand, Timor, and the Philippines, suggest that number may include at least 1,000 more family names, given the historical prevalence of inter-marriage among Luso-Asians and other ethnic groups.

Using a representative sample of family size from surveys conducted in 2012, 2013, and 2020 by this research group, a key question that led to a statistical estimate of the Macanese population is illustrated below. The final results of the survey are LINKED HERE.
